Why not take an engaging, dramatic journey, seeing Dr. King transform from his early uncertainties about Civil Rights into the iconic figure he came to be known as during a 45-minute presentation by David Mills. Mr. Mills’ stirring performance looks at the public figure and the private man. Be roused, be inspired, be transported as Mr. Mills enacts his tribute to Dr. King “Dare to Dream.”

In conjunction with the performance Mr. Mills can also lead a creative writing workshop using an excerpt from Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

What better way to celebrate Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes—affectionately known as “Shakespeare in Harlem”—than a dramatic rendition of Hughes’ life. Actor David Mills does just that, by taking the audience on an odyssey spanning six decades from Hughes’ humble Joplin, Missouri beginnings to his dream of living in Harlem but also traveling the world while writing iconic poems such as “I’ve Known Rivers,” “Mother to Son,” “I, Too,” “Montage of a Dream Deferred” and “Madam Alberta K,” his Jesse B. Semple short stories and nearly 50 plays. The American Library Association voted Mills’ Hughes piece the #4 young-adult show nationwide.

While playing black and white, young and old, and male and female characters, Mr. Mills, during his performance, highlights Hughes’ unending love for Harlem—with its foibles and fantasies and beauty and brutality. Mr. Mills’ show also explores Hughes’ penchant for humor and pathos and his gift to poetry—the blues poem.

In conjunction with the performance Mr. Mills can also lead a creative writing workshop with students using Langston Hughes blues poem “Midwinter Blues.”
